Warm baths can be one of the most comforting ways to soothe your body during pregnancy. Speaking from experience, during my twin pregnancy, I don’t know what I would’ve done without baths to ease aching muscles and help with insomnia.
So, is soaking in a tub safe while pregnant? For most people, the answer is yes baths are safe and can offer real relief. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) confirms that warm baths are generally safe during pregnancy, as long as the water isn’t too hot. Overheating, especially in early pregnancy, can raise your core body temperature and increase risks, so keeping the water temperature moderate ideally below 100°F (38°C) — is important. Midwives and doulas often recommend baths as a natural way to ease pregnancy discomfort, reduce swelling, and promote relaxation and better sleep.
However, warm baths can lower blood pressure and may cause dizziness or fainting, especially as pregnancy progresses. This is the main safety concern to be aware of. To stay safe, keep the water comfortably warm, not hot, avoid long baths, and always have someone nearby to help you get in and out of the tub safely. If you have medical conditions like preeclampsia or placenta previa, or if your healthcare provider has advised otherwise, follow their guidance before taking baths.
Pregnancy brings plenty of aches, swelling, and restless nights. Baths can relieve muscle tension and body aches, reduce swelling in feet and ankles, calm your nervous system, and improve sleep quality.
