“Am I pregnant?”
It’s one of the most Googled questions and for good reason.
Whether you’re trying to conceive or just feeling off, those first few signs can leave you second-guessing every sensation. As a longtime doula and childbirth educator, I’ve supported hundreds of families through this exact moment and I’ve been there myself. Early pregnancy symptoms can show up in subtle or not-so-subtle ways, and they often feel more intense in some pregnancies than others.
At Carriage House Birth, we support people from the very beginning. If you’re in that early, uncertain phase right now, you’re not alone.
1. Missed Period
One of the most common early signs. If your cycle is usually regular and your period doesn’t show up on time, that’s a good reason to pause and take note. Some people also experience light spotting or implantation bleeding.
2. Sore or Swollen Breasts
Many people experience breast tenderness early on fullness, sensitivity, or tingling. It can feel similar to PMS, but often more pronounced.
3. Exhaustion
This isn’t just feeling sleepy, early pregnancy fatigue can feel all consuming. Your body is working hard to support new life, and rest is essential.
4. Nausea
Nausea, with or without vomiting, can begin even before a missed period. And no, it doesn’t just happen in the morning. For some, it’s mild. For others, it can feel relentless. I’ve personally experienced how strong these symptoms can get, especially in pregnancies with multiples.
5. Bloating
Hormonal changes can slow digestion and leave you feeling gassy or uncomfortably full. This often starts before there’s any visible bump.
6. Frequent Urination
Your kidneys start processing more fluid early on, which can mean more bathroom trips even before your uterus begins to expand.
7. Mood Swings
Hormonal shifts can send your emotions on a rollercoaster. This is normal, but it can completely catch you off guard.
8. Mild Cramping or Spotting
Some people experience light cramps or spotting during implantation. While it can feel similar to period symptoms, the timing and intensity are usually different.
9. Heightened Sense of Smell/Taste
Suddenly sensitive to smells? Repulsed by your favorite dish? These sensory changes can be early signs that your body is shifting.
10. Food Aversions or Cravings
Pregnancy cravings and aversions are real. You might suddenly want sour candy or find yourself unable to stomach coffee. These shifts often show up early and feel entirely out of your control.
When Should You Take a Pregnancy Test?
Most home pregnancy tests are accurate around the time your period is due. Some early result tests can work a few days sooner, but false negatives are more common if you test too early. Trust your body and don’t be afraid to test again.
