Alright, as you're approaching your 35th week of pregnancy and beyond, there are a few things you can do to help get your body prepped for labor:
1. Evening Primrose Oil (EPO):
EPO helps to soften your cervix in preparation for labor. Buy EPO gel capsules online or at any health food store. The dose isn't super important, but most are around 1300mg.
Here's the plan:
- 35-36 weeks: One capsule orally daily.
- 36-37 weeks: One orally and one vaginally at night.
- 37+ weeks: One orally and two vaginally (morning and night)
- To use it vaginally, just prick a hole in the capsule with a clean needle, release the oil, and insert the whole thing. Don't worry if it gets a bit messy; just wear a pad.
2. Red Raspberry Leaf Tea (RRLT):
RRLT is said to strengthen your uterus and make labor smoother. Drink it hot or cold, at least once a day. Plus, it's yummy!
3. Dates:
Yep, the fruit! Research suggests that eating six dates daily in the final weeks of pregnancy can help promote shorter and more efficient labor. For example, a study shared in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology found that women who included dates in their diet during the last month of pregnancy were less likely to need labor induction and experienced a quicker first stage of labor. Check out this study on PubMed (PMID: 21280989), which substantiates these findings.
Start at 37 weeks. Dates are great in yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, or just on their own.
4. Perineal Massage (especially for first timers):
Perineal massage can help reduce tearing during delivery. You can google to find a how-to online. Start around 36 weeks if you're feeling adventurous.
5. Nutrition:
Good nutrition is crucial in preparing for labor, as the body requires optimal support for energy, hydration, and overall well-being in the final stages of pregnancy. Proper supplementation can ensure healthy blood pressure, enhance relaxation, and address increased nutrient needs.
